I’ve seen this trend circulating bookstagram, and given the fact that my TBR is positively overflowing with big series I have yet to read (seriously, narrowing down this list to just three was a challenge), it seemed the perfect trend for me.
Let’s begin with three series I want to start:

As I say, I had such a hard time narrowing down all the series I want to read to just three but these are my top priorities. All my friends and trusted reviewers have loved Gael Song, which is a trilogy that begins with the Children of Gods and Fighting Men but I believe that Shauna Lawless is currently writing Era 2, so the story doesn’t end with this trilogy. The comparisons to Daughter of the Forest and the setting of 10th Century Ireland and the interweaving of real historical events with fantasy thoroughly sold me on this one. and it’s rocketed its way to the top of my priority TBR.
Jade City is one that I’ve owned for an almost embarrassing length of time, but this series daunts me! Everyone loves it so much, and from the premise, it’s exactly the sort of thing I’d adore – multigenerational blood feuds, gangs, magic and frequently comped to a fantastical Godfather? This sounds like it was made in a lab precisely for me, and I’ve been waiting and waiting for the perfect time. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and jump in.
Finally, Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. I read Nevernight last year and I absolutely loved it. So dark and gritty, full of dark humour and a sardonic wannabe assassin, I definitely need more of Kristoff’s writing and from what I’ve heard about Empire of the Vampire, this has a similar vibe. I plan to dive into this in the autumn months.
Honourable mentions for this category go firstly to the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb, which begins with Assassin’s Apprentice and is the first trilogy in Hobb’s magnum opus, the 16-book-long Realm of the Elderlings. Then, I also really want to read some John Gwynne in the near future, whether that be Malice or The Shadow of the Gods I’m not sure. John Gwynne fans, leave your best start.
Onto three series I want to reread:

I read the Bear and the Nightingale years ago and remember almost nothing except falling in love with Katherine Ardern’s writing. I feel like this would be the perfect read for over Christmas (I mean, what’s more perfect for winter nights than a trilogy literally called Winternight). It’s set in the Russian wilderness and blends traditional folklore with such lyrical, atmospheric writing that I felt like I could physically feel the cold settling in my bones when I was reading.
More Jay Kristoff! As I said, I really loved Nevernight and I somehow never got around to continuing the series with Godsgrave and Darkdawn. I’d like to reread these before diving into Empire of the Vampire, to set me up.
Okayyy so… for a few months, I’ve been toying with the idea of rereading the Stormlight archive. I made it to about mid-way through Oathbringer before losing interest somewhat. But recently, I’ve been really missing the characters and thinking so fondly about Way of Kings and Word of Radiance in particular. To reread, read something new, that is the question…
Finally, three series I want to continue:

The Lies of Locke Lamora might be a slight cheat answer to this question, because I can’t continue the series… because the fourth book, The Thorn of Emberlain, is yet to be released. But trust that I will become insufferable if/when it does release. I’m ready when you are, Scott Lynch.
I read Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier earlier this year and absolutely adored it. Seriously, it put me in a bit of a slump because nothing else is as good. Saying that, there are two more books in the original Sevenwaters trilogy, Son of the Shadows and Child of the Prophecy. But I’m putting them off! It’s the same dilemma as Jade City – part delayed gratification, part terror it won’t live up to my expectation. Why do I do this?
It will come as no surprise to anyone who has heard me yap about books in recent months that Emma M. Lion has made this list. I’m a woman obsessed. Currently on Volume 7, full prepared to fly through Volume 8 and then I truly don’t know what I’m going to do with myself while we wait for Volume 9 (God bless Beth Brower and her plan to write 24 instalments). Probably reread. From the start.
Honourable mention – I’m really excited to continue the Red City series by Marie Lu, with the sequel Silver Dawn releasing soon. Also super super excited for Amina al-Sirafi 3 by Shannon Chakraborty. I could go on with all of the unfinished series I’m in the middle of..
So that’s my three series tag! Please tell me in the comments which series you’re excited to start / in the middle of!
