I was so lucky to take part in BookBreak’s readalong this week, and it’s been so fun to chat with everyone on StoryGraph as we progressed!

Nightshade follows Ophelia Winters, a scholarship student who has been accepted into the prestigious Sorrowsong University. Located in the isolated Scottish highlands, it’s where the sons and daughters of the rich and powerful go. Ophelia decidedly doesn’t fit in with the arrogant, entitled lordlings. Instead, she’s at Sorrowsong for one reason – to find her parents’ murderer and bring them to justice.

Alex Corbeau-Green is everything Ophelia despises about Sorrowsong – and he’s the son of the man who orchestrated her parents’ murder, four years ago. But when Ophelia begins to be tormented by a mysterious stalker, she grows closer to Alex, who seems to be, despite all odds, her closest ally in this place.

I love love love Alex and Ophelia’s relationship. They’re too cute. This gave me very Maxton Hall vibes (the highest of compliments) so if you were a fan of that, I’d definitely recommend this to you! It has more dark academia but the themes of the romance are very similar!

I also loved the setting of Sorrowsong, the prose and descriptions. Dark academia has and always will be my vibe. Additionally, I loved some of the side characters – Vincenzo and Belladonna, my feral children. And the plot twist at the end? I did not predict! I have to admit, some of the people in the readalong definitely guessed this, but they are far smarter and engaged than me!

Have you ever took part in a readalong? And have I convinced you to pick up Nightshade?! <3
