Spooky Season Recommendations: Horror, Fantasy, Gothic & More
Happy Halloween 🎃
In honour of spooky season, here are some of my favourite recommendations. A truly eclectic mix of genres, from horror to fantasy.
Books featured are:
🕯️One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig @rmgillig – a deliciously dark gothic fantasy featuring a world full of enchanted cards, haunted houses, dangerous romance and deadly stakes.
👻 The Diviners by Libba Bray @libbabray – set in 1920s New York, this luscious paranormal urban fantasy is the stuff of your dancing-to-live-jazz-in-a-speakeasy-in-a-flapper-dress dreams? No? Just me, okay.
💀 A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid @avasreid – Ava Reid established herself as the queen of the gothic, whimsical fantasy with this book featuring two scholars competing for the opportunity to redesign a famous author’s estate.
🎃 Season of Fear by Emily Cooper @ohdeeremily – a gloriously gory horror merged with fantasy about a girl with no fear who has to enter a forest full of monsters to save her sister.
👁️Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix @gradyhendrix – a horror based firmly in real life, about a maternity home for unwed mothers in the 70s.
🕷️The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones @stephengrahamjones – a historical horror written through transcribed confessional interviews with a surviving member of the Blackfeet Nation, as he hunts for justice for his massacred tribe.
⚰️ The Devils by Joe Abercrombie @literarysewer – an epic fantasy centred heavily around religion around a priest trying to put a thief on the throne and unite a ragtag crew of murderers, vampires, werewolves, necromancers.
